A student allegedly speaking “faux-Chinese"... gibberish could be expelled from Dartmouth College.
The Dartmouth College campus police are on the hunt for a student who allegedly directed “faux-Chinese... gibberish” at two Asian American students, an administrator told Campus Reform on Monday.
The incident, which allegedly occurred on Jan. 23, was classified as racially motivated verbal harassment.
According to an official, the alleged perpetrator, who is still on the lam, made eye contact with the two other students in a public area before directing the “faux-Chinese” accent in their direction.
The police investigation began after the victims reported the incident to the Office of Plurality and Leadership which then reported it to the Safety and Security Department.
John Cramer, Dartmouth’s Associate Director for Media Relations, told Campus Reform on Monday such speech would not be tolerated and that if the student is caught he could face expulsion.
“It is completely unacceptable for students to behave that way…ways that are completely offensive, period,” Cramer commented on the issue.
Other penalties could include a mandatory sensitivity course or a paying a fine, he said.
Cramer said the two students did not feel threatened, but that they were offended which is enough to justify the ensuing investigation.
“It does not have to involve a physical threat,” said Cramer, who noted that the two victims were “shocked at such idiocy.”
