Massachusetts DA sponsors a workshop on college drinking uses junk science, hires a magician/hypnotist.
Amherst, MA – The Northwestern District Attorney’s office is hoping to reduce college drinking by sponsoring a workshop next week to teach student leaders how to change the culture amongst their peers.
The workshop at the University of Massachusetts is co-sponsored by the UMass Campus and Community Coalition, UMass Health Services and the Northampton Prevention Coalition.
Leaders from Mount Holyoke, Smith, Hampshire, and Amherst colleges and Greenfield and Holyoke community colleges have been invited to participate in the program called “It’s Your Call: A Conference for Student Leaders on Changing the Culture of Underage and Destructive Drinking on Campuses.”
“Most quality of life issues and crime in Amherst and Hadley revolve around underage drinking,” said Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan.
He said his office’s prosecutes as one way to address the problem. But he said that’s “putting a bandage on a real serious problem.”
Rob Hackenson, founder of Dynamic Influence, will be the keynote speaker. He is a magician and National Guild of Hypnotists-certified hypnotist as well as having an MBA and Certificate in Advanced Organizational Leadership from Nichols College.
UMass Police Lt. Thomas O’Donnell will speak and UMass Health Services will provide training on how to become an active bystander. (are they encouraging students to spy on each other?)
