NY to begin using GPS tags on domestic violence offenders it will warn victims if they get too close.
A New York borough is to begin using GPS tracking tags in a bid to tackle the problem of domestic violence.
Starting next year, Staten Island will use the electronic devices to keep track of offenders who have been found guilty of abusing their partners.
If the system shows that the wearer is in the vicinity a potential victim it alerts both her and the authorities warning them of the potential danger and giving a pinpoint location.
The devices, often used on criminals while on parole, cost around $10 a day to monitor, but this will be paid for by the offender and not the taxpayer or the victim.
If the offender is unable to afford the costs they will come out of witness protection funds.
